Mind the gap.

How serendipitous I came across this image while scrolling, avoiding, hemming and hawing about what to post with respect to my recent resume gap.

In a recent survey, 82% of respondents admitted to making their lives look more glamorous than the reality. Image from author and illustrator, Liz Fosslien.

As I prepare for a screening call on Thursday, I have no shame in my previous gaps. Many due to circumstances entirely out of my control (the owner folded the company, it was a contract gig) or personal choice (I moved because I fell in love). I also left a job because the culture wasn’t a good fit and 9 years ago I was let go during a company wide reduction in force (RIF). But how often are we allowed the opportunity to tell those stories? They aren’t stories of failures; they are opportunities to explore curiosities, to learn and grow.

“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.”
— Søren Kierkegaard.

Here’s what I landed on for my recent gap:

Unable to work for several months due to illness. I moved to West Michigan to be with family and took time to rest and heal.

Fully recovered, I finished a few extra courses to graduate a semester sooner than planned; expected graduation date is May 2023 with my B.A. in Organizational Leadership. I also re-engaged my passion for writing (you’re here! reading it! yay!), yoga, and running (currently training for the River Bank Run, the largest 25K in the country). Recently I consulted a few startups on digital strategy.

I also coordinated our home buying process in November, and my partner and I are delighted to settle in Grand Rapids! Currently, I’m learning German and finishing HubSpot’s Digital Marketing Certification, and I look forward to returning to the workforce.

What do you think?
Now accepting questions, constructive criticisms, and complements.
