The best runner’s high

3 weeks after I found out I had cancer I came to Michigan for a second opinion on my options. That weekend was the last time I was able to run with my dad.

It was cold and rainy. We pushed against 15+ mph wind gusts to get to the breakwater and run around the lighthouse. There was a moment of calm on the backside of the lighthouse then, like a slingshot, Mother Nature whipped us around it and shot us back down the pier. We ran fast miles back to the house and plopped down to enjoy some pancakes together.

This morning I was up with dad as he readied for a long run. But not until after he helped me out of the recliner and made sure I had what I needed. We talked about his route and how we wished we could run together today. But, he lovingly reminded me, I’ll run again. We’ll run together again soon.

I’m recovering well just 4 days after surgery, much to his credit alongside my mom and Russ. Dad has been up at 1 in the morning with me, he’s walked in the garden with me, driven me to see the lake when I can’t make the walk. He’s been my running buddy, my caretaker, the most loving father a girl could ask for. Running with dad gives me the greatest runner’s high. I can’t wait until we hit the pavement together again. In the meantime, he’s back from his run and we’re going to plop down and have some pancakes together.
